Clayton Kershaw named Dodgers’ opening-day starter
PHOENIX -- Clayton Kershaw will be the Dodgers’ opening-day starter for the third consecutive year, Manager Don Mattingly announced Saturday.
The Dodgers start their season on April 1 against the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium.
As the team took the field for the first full-squad workout of the spring, Mattingly said of Kershaw, “You like guys that are low maintenance. He’s been relatively healthy. He’s pretty consistent in his outings. You don’t get big fluctuations. You kind of know what to count on, what you can expect.”
The Dodgers are 2-0 in Kershaw’s opening-day starts. In 2011, he pitched seven scoreless innings to beat Tim Lincecum and the Giants, 1-0, at Dodger Stadium. Last year, he was limited to three innings in San Diego because of a severe stomach flu. The Dodgers still beat the Padres, 5-3.
The last Dodgers pitcher to make three consecutive opening-day starts was Derek Lowe, from 2005-2007.
