Anaheim Ducks donate rink to Star View Elementary

Students at Star View Elementary School in Midway City were surprised Monday with a street hockey rink on the school playground.

The Anaheim Ducks, the National Hockey League and school officials teamed up over the school’s spring break last week to create the area, which is bright white, like a real hockey rink, surrounded by 3-feet-tall plastic sides and equipped with regulation-size nets. The school also received goalie equipment and 100 sticks.

Star View was also upgraded with campus murals, garden plants and trees donated by the Ducks.

Principal Jamie Goodwyn said a permanent fixture is greatly appreciated, noting that over the past few years, fourth- and fifth-graders would often play hockey on the basketball court using portable bumpers.

“The installation of the rink is an absolutely amazing privilege for our students to be receiving this,” she said. “They love playing hockey so much, and this is a way for them to grow that love even more.”

Goodwyn said she hopes Star View will eventually be able to host hockey tournaments with other schools in the Huntington Beach-based Ocean View School District.

A Ducks spokesperson said Star View Elementary was chosen to receive the rink because of the school’s participation in the team’s educational initiatives.
