Jerry Brown skips White House gathering for New York meetings
SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Jerry Brown skipped a meeting at the White House on Monday and hopped a train for New York, where he will meet with a former Treasury secretary and a past chairman of the Federal Reserve.
Instead of attending the White House session near the end of a meeting of the National Governors Assn., Brown left Washington on Monday afternoon and plans to spend the night in New York before heading back to California on Tuesday, according to spokesman Evan Westrup.
In New York, he is scheduled to talk with Robert Rubin, Treasury secretary under President Clinton, and Paul Volcker, who headed the Fed from 1979 to 1987.
Westrup said there was no specific agenda for the private meetings, but that they offered “an opportunity for the governor to meet with leaders from other parts of the country.”
Brown also has a meeting scheduled with author and New York University professor William Baumol, the author of “The Cost Disease,” about the price of healthcare.
Though he skipped Monday’s meeting, Brown, along with other governors, did attend a black-tie dinner at the White House on Sunday night.
