Flash flooding disrupts traffic on 60 Freeway in Riverside
Rain from Hurricane Norbert, currently dwindling along Mexico’s Baja peninsula, caused flash flooding along the 60 Freeway in Riverside on Sunday afternoon, officials said.
The showers resulted in at least two inches of rain in the slow lane of the eastbound freeway at Main Street, leaving cars stuck in the water, according to the California Highway Patrol. Workers set out cones to separate the affected area from fast-moving traffic.
Early Sunday, officials had issued a flash-flood warning for northwestern Riverside County and southwestern San Bernardino County, which covers Riverside, Moreno Valley, San Bernardino, Rialto, Redlands and Fontana.
“Conditions are favorable for thunderstorms,” said Stephen Harrison, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in San Diego. Storms are expected to develop Sunday evening and continue into Monday.
