Rain leaves 23,000 DWP customers without power

A rainstorm moving through Southern California left 23,000 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers without power Monday morning, officials said.

With 7,900 outages, Venice was hit hardest by the power failure, followed by Green Meadows, San Pedro and Hollywood. Customers in East Hollywood, Palms, Van Nuys and Westchester also reported problems.

Crews responding to outage calls are working to restore power as quickly possible, the DWP said.

Among the most frequent causes of power outages during storms are palm fronds, tree branches and other debris that fall and hit power lines, the department said. Such outages are common during the first rain after an extensive dry period.
