Dozens of animals die in pet store fire

More than 30 animals were killed when a fire burned a pet store early Tuesday.
At around 2:30 a.m., firefighters were called to the 4400 block of Lennox Boulevard for reports of smoke coming from a building, said Inspector Joey Marron of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The fire began above the drop ceiling and then came down into the store, Marron said. Investigators said the cause was electrical, he said.
Firefighters aggressively attacked the blaze and were able to knock it down within 20-25 minutes. They immediately began ventilating the building and removing animals, Marron said.
The store had 200 to 250 animals inside, he said.
“So far, we know that 35 have died,” Marron said.
Animal control is on the scene and working with the owner to get a total count of the animals that didn’t make it, according to fire officials.
