Downey parents to face murder charges after death of infant

Downey police Friday said the parents of a 4-month-old girl face charges of murder and neglect after her death was deemed a homicide.

Officers were called to an Imperial Highway apartment Tuesday, where they found the baby unresponsive and started performing CPR, according to the Downey Police Department. Paramedics arrived, and the child was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said that after an autopsy, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office ruled the girl’s death a homicide.

A preliminary examination found that the infant had suffered from blunt-force trauma and malnutrition, Coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter told the Associated Press.

Downey police have not released the names of the two people arrested. The district attorney’s office was not able to provide any additional information late Friday afternoon.
