Bay Area man fatally shot after hitting deputy with bat, officials say
Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a 61-year-old man inside his Bay Area home this week after the man struck a deputy with a baseball bat, authorities said.
Alameda County firefighters and paramedics responded to the San Lorenzo home of David Goins late Monday to investigate calls about a resident having a seizure, authorities told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Sgt. J.D. Nelson told the newspaper that as Goins was being taken to an ambulance, he became combative, assaulted a paramedic, then ran back into his house.
When a sheriff’s sergeant and deputy entered the home, Goins “came out with a baseball bat and hit the sergeant,” Nelson told the Chronicle. The sergeant and deputy then opened fire, killing Goins, Nelson said.
Deputies had been to Goins’ home 19 times since 2011 to investigate reports of domestic violence, public drunkenness and other incidents, Nelson said.
He told the Chronicle the sergeant involved in Monday’s shooting suffered a bruised arm.
