Two people died and a third person was critically injured when a car slammed into a tree on the 60 Freeway in eastern Riverside County, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday night.
One lane of the westbound freeway near Western Knolls Avenue, about 20 miles east of Riverside near Beaumont, was shut down Wednesday night but was not affecting traffic, the CHP said.
The agency described the vehicle as a black sedan and said the two fatalities appeared to have been passengers. The critically injured victim was the driver.
The accident was reported shortly before 7:30 p.m. Investigators remained at the scene waiting for a coroner.
