Senior Noreen Cruz went 4-0, with two pins, a tech fall and a decision in the 98-pound weight division, beating Santa Monica freshman Jazzy Green, 8-6 in the finals to take first place at the State Qualifying Regionals for Region Four at Valhalla High in El Cajon on Saturday. The tournament, which covered the Southern, San Diego and the LA City sections, hosted approximately 120 girls in 16-man bracketed competition with the top five wrestlers in each division qualifying for the State meet this Saturday at Vallejo High. Cruz and Green have faced each other three times this season, with Cruz winning all three matches.
“Each time it’s gotten closer between these two,” said West Covina coach Shirley Stephens. “The way the state seedings are [in Vallejo], there is no way these two will see each other until the finals. I won’t be surprised if that’s the final matchup.”
San Marino’s Elizabeth Tran went 4-0 with four pins in the 110-pound weight class and was named tournament MVP of the lower weight division to lead the Titans to a second place finish. The senior Tran did not have a point scored against her in the tournament. San Marino also qualified Heidi Denault who finished third at 105, and Anastasia Krlov who took fourth at 154 pounds.
