CITY SECTION LEAGUE FINALS
WEST VALLEY LEAGUE
At Birmingham High
Boys
Sophomore Jamere Holland and junior Elijah Wells led a Taft team that won 11 of 15 events on a hot and sometimes breezy afternoon.
Holland anchored the Toreadors’ victorious 400-meter relay team to 41.68 clocking to move to second on the yearly state list behind Long Beach Poly’s 41.12 best.
He followed that with a winning time of 10.50 in the 100 that was triggered by a great start and helped by an aiding breeze. The breeze might not have been over the allowable of 2.0 meters per second for record purposes, but it will most likely be counted as a wind-aided mark because no wind gauges were in use at the meet.Holland followed his victory in the 100 with a winning time of 21.32 in the 200 while being aided by a breeze that was significantly stronger than when he ran the 100.He completed his day by running the anchor leg on a Taft team that won the 1,600 relay in 3:21.05.
Wells won the 400 in 48.35 and placed third in the 200 in 21.98 and also ran the first legs on both of Taft’s relay teams.
The top four finishers in each event automatically qualified for the City preliminaries at Birmingham on May 20, as did any other athletes who met an at-large qualifying standard in their events.
