‘Starred Up’ tops British Independent Film Awards nominations

The drama “Starred Up” earned the most nominations for the 16th Moet British Independent Film Awards on Monday morning, receiving eight, including best film, best director for David Mackenzie, best actor for Jack O’Connell and supporting actor for Rupert Friend and Ben Mendelsohn. “The Selfish Giant” received seven, followed by “Filth,” “Metro Manila” and “Le Week-end” with five nominations each.
Joining “Starred Up” in the best British Independent Film category are “Metro Manila,” “Philomena,” “The Selfish Giant” and “Le Week-end.”
Vying with Mackenzie for best director are Jon S. Baird for “Filth,” Clio Barnard for “The Selfish Giant,” Sean Ellis for “Metro Mania” and Jonathan Glazer for “Under the Skin.”

Besides O’Connell, best actor nominations went to Jim Broadbent for “Le Week-end,” Steven Coogan for “Philomena,” Tom Hardy for “Locke” and James McAvoy for “Filth.”
Nominated for best actress were Judi Dench for “Philomena,” Lindsay Duncan for “Le Week-end,” Scarlett Johansson for “Under the Skin,” Felicity Jones for “The Invisible Woman” and Saoirse Ronan for “How I Live.”
The winners will be announced Dec. 8 at a ceremony hosted by actor James Nesbitt at the Old Billingsgate in London.
