Classic Hollywood: ‘McHale’s Navy’ DVD box set rounds up Ernest Borgnine’s oddball crew
Only six years after winning the lead actor Oscar as a lonely butcher in the Academy Award-winning best film “Marty,” Ernest Borgnine got the chance to show his comedic chops in ABC’s slapstick World War II-era sitcom “McHale’s Navy” from 1962 to ’66. Borgnine played Quinton McHale, the skipper of TP-73. The supporting cast of comedic talent included Tim Conway, Carl Ballantine, Gavin McLeod and Joe Flynn. On Tuesday, Shout! Factory is releasing the entire 138 episodes on a 21-DVD box set complete with the feature films 1964’s “McHale’s Navy” and 1965’s “McHale’s Navy Joins the Air Force.”
