One dead, four injured in Gaslamp Quarter shooting in San Diego; suspect in custody

SAN DIEGO —  One person was killed and four others were wounded when a gunman opened fire late Thursday night in San Diego’s popular Gaslamp Quarter, authorities said.

The suspected shooter, identified only as a 32-year-old man, was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered at the scene, authorities said. An officer shot the suspect with a Taser during a confrontation, and he was transported to a local hospital to be medically evaluated.

The gunfire erupted around 10:30 p.m. at Fifth Avenue and J Street, Brown said. A preliminary investigation indicates the shooter walked up to a man standing near the Pendry Hotel and opened fire.

The gunman walked off, then turned around and opened fire on the victim again, Brown said. The 28-year-old victim died at the scene.

A block away, the gunman confronted a group of men and opened fire again, she said.

The bullets struck four people. A 27-year-old man was shot in his upper chest; a 68-year-old man was hit in his torso; a 26-year-old man was shot in an arm, while a 28-year-old man was also hit in an arm, authorities said. Three of the men were transported to a local hospital; the 28-year-old was treated at the scene and released.
