Chrysler recalling more than 3,600 Dodge Vipers for faulty air bags

Chrysler is recalling some model year 2003 and 2004 Dodge Viper sports cars because of an air bag defect that may cause them to deploy unexpectedly while driving.
The Dodge Vipers were manufactured from Nov. 1, 2001, through June 30, 2004.
The recall involves more than 3,600 cars.
Chrysler says that a component in the air bag control module may fail, causing the front air bags to deploy inadvertently while the car is being driven.
The same problem may also activate the car’s seat belt pretensioners.
The problem could result in an injury and possibly a crash.
The Dodge Viper is one of the world’s fastest cars. Brand new, they retailed for more than $81,000 and some 2004 models can still fetch $28,000 to nearly $48,000, depending on their condition, according to some car auction websites.
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. An interim notification is expected to be sent this month. The remedy is expected to be available later in the year. Owners may contact Chrysler at (800) 247-9753.
