BMW to recall X5 diesel SUVs to fix power steering problem

BMW is recalling about 35,000 X5 sport utility vehicles in the U.S. and Canada because a bolt could break in the steering system.
The problem affects model year 2009 through 2012 X5s equipped with diesel engines. No crashes or injuries have been reported from the problem.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the engine belt idler pulley bolt in these BMWs could loosen and break over time. If the engine belt idler pulley bolt breaks, the vehicle may unexpectedly lose power-assisted steering, making it suddenly harder to drive and increasing the risk of a crash.
In the event of such a malfunction the alternator warning lamp (the battery icon) will be illuminated in the vehicle’s instrument cluster, along with the warning message “Charging malfunction.” BMW said.
The problem was first detected through a warranty claim at a dealership in Canada two years ago.
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace and tighten the idler pulley bolt. The recall is expected to begin in January.
