Festival of Trees and Hospitality Night
When, where: Wednesday and Thursday, Cambria Veteran’s Hall (Festival of Trees) and Main Street and Burton Drive (Hospitality Night)
Highlights: These two days of holiday celebrations feature a tree auction and an open house with food, wine and shopping discounts. Also decorations, carolers – and Santa.
Cost: $20 for the Festival of Trees; Hospitality Night is free.

WOODLAND, CALIF.
Gibson House Museum Festival of Trees
When, where: Thursday and Saturday, Gibson House
Highlights: The stately Gibson House welcomes the season Thursday with a festive silent auction of Christmas trees, centerpieces and décor. On Saturday, children can meet Santa and make crafts.
Cost: $35 a person or $60 a couple for Thursday event. The Saturday event is free.

Dance-Along Nutcracker
When, where: Dec. 11 and 12, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
Highlights: The San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band’s creative take on the classic ballet incorporates the 2010 theme “At Sea.” Attendees should expect to participate actively in the performance.
Cost: $50 for the Dec. 11 evening show (adults only, including cocktails, buffet and burlesque acts); matinees are $25 for adults, $16 for children and seniors.

A Miner’s Christmas
When, where: Dec. 11 and 12, 18 and 19, Columbia State Historic Park
Highlights: Celebrate the holiday as California’s early settlers did in a 19th century town. Miners will roast chestnuts over an open fire, plus story telling, crafts and Father Christmas.
Cost: Free

Winter Solstice Festival
When, where: Dec. 18, downtown
Highlights: One of America’s northernmost locales celebrates what promises to be a long night with music, food, fireworks, a window-decorating contest and an appearance by Santa Claus.
