A tragic toll
Malibu has been the site of several major brush fires in the last few decades. Here are some of the worst:
2007: Fire burns 4,500 acres and destroys 22 structures, including Castle Kashan and Malibu Presbyterian Church.
1993: Fire kills three people and destroys 268 homes from Calabasas to Malibu.
1978: Flames destroy 230 homes in Malibu, Agoura and surrounding areas.
1970: Ten people die and 403 homes are lost when several blazes combine into a wall of flames from Newhall to Malibu.
