Santa Monica’s Foshag more than makes the cut

Last summer, whenever Santa Monica was playing basketball in a gym and 6-foot-3 guard Holden Foshag was on the court, fans would see his long blond hair hitting his shoulders and get into an argument over which movie character he resembled more: Jeff Spicoli, the surfer dude from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” or “Sunshine,” the quarterback from “Remember The Titans.”
Then Foshag did something shocking at the end of the summer: he cut off his hair, something he hadn’t done since seventh grade.
“I had a job interview,” he said. “I had to cut it to be more professional.”
The good news is that Foshag, a senior, got the job working at a pizza restaurant. Even more important, he donated his 12 inches of hair to an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients. And he’s up for an academic scholarship.
He now has a neatly-trimmed haircut for a teenager and it has even helped his basketball. He’s a top three-point shooter, and his hair is no longer in the way when he shoots and he doesn’t have to tie it in a ponytail, either.
Friends had told him to cut it, but he said they were shocked when he finally did.
As for his mother, he said, “My mom loved the hair but she agreed it was time to change.”
So Foshag is earning money at his job, making shots and no longer being called “Sunshine.”
But truth be told, “I do miss it,” he said.
Transfer season
It’s not mentioned in any CIF guide, but January is usually a month where students transfer because one semester is ending and another beginning.
Football players want to get to a new school to start preparing for spring practice. Yes, it has become almost college-like.
So be on the lookout for new students walking around campus.
All-star games
High school football season hasn’t ended for a select group of players set to play next month in all-star games in Texas and Florida.
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl will take place on Saturday, Jan. 8 in San Antonio. The Under Armour All-American Game will be played Wednesday, Jan. 5 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Both games figure to be used to announce college commitments.
