The link between Joe Torre and Don Mattingly is so strong that many fans assume Mattingly played for Torre with the New York Yankees. But Mattingly’s last year as a player, in 1995, was Buck Showalter’s last year as the Yankees’ manager. Showalter led New York to its first playoff berth in 14 years, then left rather than let George Steinbrenner dictate the coaching staff. He later managed the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers, and he makes his Baltimore Orioles debut on Tuesday, against the Angels.
