Changing wind patterns linked to global warming appear to be altering the food chain in Antarctica.
The most basic food, plankton, is declining in the northern parts of the Antarctic peninsula, researchers reported in the journal Science on Friday.
At the same time, populations of Adelie penguins, which require a colder climate, have dropped sharply in that region, whereas warmer-weather chin-strap penguins have increased.
