A 17-year-old Torrance boy died Monday after he was swept underwater by an aggressive tide south of the pier at Manhattan Beach.
The boy, who was swimming with his cousin, was unresponsive when officers arrived. He was taken to Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance in grave condition.
At 6:12 p.m. Monday, he was pronounced dead after being on life support, said Sgt. Bryan Klatt of the Manhattan Beach Police Department. “This is fairly rare for our beach,” Klatt said. “I can’t even remember the last time we had a drowning here.”
The boy was not the only victim of the high surf over the weekend. At the Wedge in Newport Beach, a 50-year-old man identified as Monte Valantin of Lawndale died Sunday after he was slammed against the harbor jetty by the heavy surf.
