The list of candidates for the Sept. 1 special election for the 51st Assembly District has dropped to six after one of those who filed did not qualify, according to the secretary of state’s office.
Student and disability commissioner Shirl Deadra Green of Los Angeles did not turn in enough valid signatures, leaving five Democrats and one Republican, David Coffin, a businessman, researcher and writer.
The Democratic candidates are Gardena City Councilman Steve Bradford; Thomas Jefferson Cares, who did not provide a ballot designation; perennial candidate Mervin Leon Evans, an author, businessman and consultant; Gloria D. Gray, a director of the West Basin Municipal Water District and a former Inglewood school board member; and Lawndale City Councilman Robert Pullen-Miles, an aide to state Sen. Jenny Oropeza (D-Long Beach).
If no candidate wins a majority in the open primary, a runoff will be held Nov. 3. Democrats strongly outnumber Republicans in the district, which stretches east from Westchester and Lawndale to include parts of Los Angeles.
