Police shot and killed an armed man near the U.S. Capitol in what authorities described as a routine rush hour traffic stop that turned deadly.
U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Schneider said the 35-year-old man sped away after being stopped a few blocks from the Capitol. He drove the wrong way down a street and crashed into a cruiser in a heavily guarded area about a block north of the Capitol grounds, striking two officers along the way, she said.
Police opened fire after the man held up a handgun and refused to put it down, Schneider said. The officers who were hit by the man’s car had minor injuries.
