UC Irvine holds off Cal State Fullerton

at UC Irvine 78, Cal State Fullerton 74: Eric Wise made four consecutive free throws in the final seconds of overtime to lead the Anteaters (3-10, 1-0) over the Titans (6-8, 0-2) in a Big West Conference game. Michael Hunter made a three-point basket with 25.3 seconds left in overtime to give Irvine a 74-71 lead. Wise grabbed a rebound, was fouled and converted both free throws two seconds later to give Irvine a five-point lead. Fullerton guard Marcio Lassiter made a three-pointer with four seconds left to cut it to 76-74. Wise, who was fouled on the inbounds pass, made two more free throws to put the game away. Senior Brett Lauer scored a career-high 27 points to lead Irvine. Wise, a freshman, had 25 points.
at Pepperdine 77, Western Oregon 67: Mychel Thompson scored 21 points and Dane Suttle had 16 to help the Waves (3-13) hold off the Division II Wolves (6-4) at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Wolves pulled as close as 68-65 when Travis Kuhns made two free throws with 2:50 left, but Thompson scored five consecutive points on a jump shot and three-pointer to extend Pepperdine’s lead.
