Leading contributors: Junior guard Miles Cartwright scored 27 points and senior center Carl Hoffman had 24 points for Loyola. Senior guard Brad Lewis scored 38 points for Simi Valley, which was in control of this Southern Section Division II-A quarterfinal playoff game, leading, 44-39, at halftime. But Loyola held Lewis scoreless for the first six minutes of the third quarter to open a 60-49 lead. The Pioneers were down by only three points with 3:41 left, but the Cubs went on an 11-0 run.
Why it matters: Loyola advances to a semifinal game against No. 2-seeded La Mirada, setting up a terrific matchup. La Mirada’s 6-foot-8 Derrick Williams scored 29 points in a 66-48 win over Chino Hills Ayala.
Records: Loyola 23-5; Simi Valley 22-7.

Why it matters: This Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinal girls’ basketball playoff game features two teams ranked in the Southland by The Times. Both No. 6 Troy and No. 11 Etiwanda went undefeated in their respective leagues and neither is a playoff neophyte. Etiwanda lost to Fontana Miller in a Division II-AA semifinal last year and Troy was defeated by Santa Margarita in the second round of the Division I-AA playoffs. Senior guard Amber Williams averages 17.3 points, junior center Jasmine Bernard 11.4 and junior guard Natalia Hawthorne 11.2 for Etiwanda. Junior guard Alex Sanchez averages 14.1 points and senior guard Chrystal Guarin 11.6 for Troy.
