A PEEK IN THE CLOSET
The 2009 Oscar-nominated actresses run the gamut in age, experience and past nominations. On one end there is 15-time nominee (two-time winner) Meryl Streep and six-time nominee Kate Winslet, and on the other there is veteran actress Melissa Leo right there with fellow first-time nominees Anne Hathaway, Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson. It should make for some diverse styles on Sunday’s red carpet. Here’s a look at their recent fashion choices to help us predict their Oscar selections.

Anne Hathaway
Lead actress,
“Rachel Getting Married”
Hathaway wore a white Loris Azzaro gown to the SAG Awards and a pale Chloe bejeweled romper frock to the Oscar nominee lunch. She’s been stunning all season, thanks to stylist Rachel Zoe. On her new fashion icon status, she declined the crown. “I’m not an icon. I just had a good year.”

Angelina Jolie
Lead actress, “Changeling”
Jolie is no longer the wild child of the red carpets. Befitting her status as human-rights activist and mother of six, she’s worn an elegant Atelier Versace silvery loose gown to the Golden Globes and a black strapless Armani couture with a yellow stripe accent to the BAFTA Orange Awards. But she got the most ink this season for wearing her Max Azria gown backward to the SAG Awards. This likely isn’t her year to win, so she may tone down. But, then again, maybe she’ll blow all the other actresses out of the water with a glam gown. We can only hope.

Melissa Leo
Lead actress, “Frozen River”
Leo is not what you would call a fashion force in Hollywood. And that’s just fine with her. Yes, she’s picking out an elegant gown, but she’s also prepping with holistic cleansing and all-natural skin treatments. No Botox frozen face for her. At the Oscar nominees luncheon, she said, “Have no facial expressions? That’s the opposite of what actors are supposed to do, isn’t it?”

Meryl Streep
Lead actress, “Doubt”
For her 2007 Globe nod for “The Devil Wears Prada,” she wore a pale pink Carolina Herrera chiffon gown with sleeves. At the 2007 Oscars, she chose a black Prada skirt and belted jacket. Our prediction: something comfortable and classy. With sleeves.

Kate Winslet
Lead actress, “The Reader”
Winslet has come a long way from her pale pink gown and hot pink pashmina shawl at her first Oscars and her emerald green velvet Givenchy by Alexander McQueen for her “Titanic” nomination. But this season, she’s done best sticking to classic silhouettes in black. She hit a double wearing YSL black at the Golden Globes and a bright blue Narciso Rodriguez at the SAG Awards. For the BAFTA Orange Awards, she steered a classic course in a Zac Posen black sculpted gown with a low bun.

Amy Adams
Supporting actress, “Doubt”
Adams favors classic, elegant styles. She was stunning in a fitted Jean Bastis Tevalli burgundy gown at the SAG Awards. For the BAFTA Orange Awards, she wore a Roland Mouret 1930s-inspired periwinkle blue design. I guess expecting something wild and crazy from her on Oscar night is out of the question, right? Right.

Penelope Cruz
Supporting actress,
“Vicky Cristina Barcelona”
Cruz has a strong Chanel track record. She wore a Chanel blue feather gown to the Oscars in 2008. A few weeks ago, she chose a black-lace Chanel for Spain’s Goya Cinema Awards. Our money is on Chanel for Sunday.

Viola Davis
Supporting actress, “Doubt”
Davis lit up the SAG carpet in a yellow David Meister halter gown. And her bright orange frock at the Oscar nominees lunch was a huge hit. We’re pretty sure she’ll stick with a bold color. And we know she’ll look fabulous. “I never thought I was cute,” she said at the lunch. “Now I’m walking in front of these photographers, feeling kinda cute.”

Taraji P. Henson
Supporting actress, “The
Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
Henson looked so pretty in a pale pink Alberta Ferretti day suit at the Oscar nominees lunch. We would not be surprised if she did Ferretti again on Oscar night.

Marisa Tomei
Supporting actress,
“The Wrestler”
The fact that Tomei wore an ivory Christian Dior dress to the nominees luncheon could signal that she will do Dior for the big night.
