In doing research for a visit to the Normandy landing beaches of France, I came across a Susan Spano article headlined “Normandy Mission” (June 6, 2004). It mentioned flowers on the grave of Lt. Deane Quilici. Most likely, those were flowers we placed at our visit. My husband and I have made two visits to the Normandy cemetery and each time placed flowers on the graves of the Nevada Boys, Easy Company (from “Band of Brothers” fame) and the glider boys who were killed nearby. We will do so again in May, but this time, my husband’s son Jake will join us. We want to impress on him the importance of remembering the fallen and the war’s impact on our nation.
It was heartening to realize someone besides us knew the flowers were there and that others remember.
