Re “Janet Jagan, 1920-2009,” Obituary, March 29
Thank you for the obituary for former Guyana President Janet Jagan. It is gratifying to read an accurate assessment of her life and accomplishments.
I would like to comment on one point. I am a relative, and also the director, writer and producer of the 2003 award-winning documentary about Jagan, “Thunder in Guyana.” Janet was often annoyed by those who mischaracterized her as the brains behind her late husband, Cheddi Jagan. This was a rumor spread to discredit her husband and to perpetuate the racist stereotype that a white person was behind a successful Indo-Guyanese leader.
Janet and Cheddi were both incredible people on their own merits.
