Don’t raise fears -- quell them

Why does the media like to panic the public by using comparisons of sales to previous years? Yes, the economy might have been stronger last year, but comparing this month to a month from a year ago is not a realistic analysis of what is happening right now.
Using the sensationalism of comparing today to last year frightens people into thinking that things are getting horribly worse every day, thus helping plunge our economy into a recession.
The thing that can prevent a recession is consumer spending. So why is the media perpetuating false fears that will only guarantee one?
All it takes to save the economy right now is a clear picture of reality, not scare tactics. Katerine Chalkidou
