at New York 13, Florida 0: John Maine flirted with the first no-hitter in Mets history before giving up an infield single to Paul Hoover with two out in the eighth inning. Maine finished with 14 strikeouts, the most by a Mets pitcher in eight years, and departed to a raucous ovation long after Marlins catcher Miguel Olivo charged across the diamond and threw a punch at Jose Reyes in the fifth, setting off a benches-clearing brawl.
Washington 4, at Philadelphia 2: The Nationals got in the Phillies’ way, leaving the East Division even with one game to go. If Philadelphia and the Mets are still tied after today, there will be a one-game playoff Monday in Philadelphia. Both would be eliminated from wild-card contention if San Diego wins its final game against Milwaukee.
Chicago 4, at Cincinnati 0: Rich Hill gave up one hit in six innings and Matt Murton and Ronny Cedeno homered.
St. Louis 7, at Pittsburgh 3: Rick Ankiel homered and had three RBIs for the Cardinals, who won their fourth in a row.
at Houston 3, Atlanta 2: Brandon Backe, who sat out most of the season after Tommy John surgery, made his fifth start of the year, giving up a run and four hits in six innings.
at Colorado 11, Arizona 1: Troy Tulowitzki hit his first career grand slam, the Rockies’ eighth grand slam of the season, adding to their club record.
at Milwaukee 4, San Diego 3: Mitch Stetter got the final out in the 11th and picked up his first major league win.
at Dodgers 6, San Francisco 5 (10 innings): Luis Gonzalez’s single provided the winning margin.
