Suzuki’s three hits help lift Mariners

NEW YORK -- Ichiro Suzuki had three hits against Roger Clemens, Felix Hernandez (11-7) pitched seven sharp innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the New York Yankees, 7-1, Monday in the first game of a key series.
Clemens (6-6) gave up eight hits and five runs in four innings, and left to get an MRI exam on his right elbow.
“First three innings it was a manageable situation for him, and then it started to tighten up,” Manager Joe Torre said. “Hopefully, it’s just something that needs a little rest.”
Seattle ended a season-worst nine-game losing streak and trimmed New York’s American League wild-card lead to one game.
“I can sleep tonight,” Manager John McLaren said. “That’s a start.”
Suzuki homered in the third inning to reach 200 hits for the seventh consecutive season, tying the AL record set by Wade Boggs from 1983-89.
Alex Rodriguez had a broken-bat run-scoring single in the first for New York.
