* at Boston 13, Toronto 10: Daisuke Matsuzaka nearly gave away a nine-run lead, but Mike Lowell hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs to lead the Red Sox. Boston, which opened a seven-game lead over second-place New York in the American League East, was ahead 10-1, but Toronto scored eight runs in the sixth inning and knocked out Matsuzaka (14-11), who had lost his previous three starts.
* Cleveland 5, at Minnesota 0: C.C. Sabathia (16-7) threw eight shutout innings to beat Johan Santana (14-11) for the second time in a week and help the first-place Indians extend their American League Central lead over the third-place Twins to 10 1/2 games. Santana has lost his five starts against the Indians. The last Twins pitcher to be 0-5 in one season against the same opponent was Joe Decker, against Oakland in 1974.
* Kansas City 8, at Texas 1: Zack Greinke (6-5) gave up five hits in five shutout innings for his first win as a starter since April 10, Ross Gload hit a home run and Alex Gordon had three hits and drove in four runs for the Royals, who need one more win to avoid their fourth consecutive 100-loss season.
* at Tampa Bay 9, Baltimore 7: Carlos Pena hit a team-record 35th homer, a tiebreaking two-run drive in a three-run seventh inning that helped the Devil Rays overcome a four-run deficit. Pena’s drive against Jim Hoey (1-4) struck an overhanging catwalk and gave Tampa Bay a 6-4 lead.
* Seattle 7, at New York 1: Ichiro Suzuki had three hits, including a home run, and the Mariners ended a nine-game skid.
* at Angels 9, Oakland 5: Ervin Santana (6-12) pitched two-hit ball over 6 1/3 scoreless innings for his first win since June 9.
