Pittsburgh’s Stull is sidelined indefinitely

Pittsburgh quarterback Bill Stull is out indefinitely after needing surgery Sunday to repair a ligament injury in his right thumb that occurred during his first college start.

The injury is similar to that suffered a year ago by Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm, who sat out two games after being injured during an early-season game against Miami.

Stull, a junior, was injured when his thumb was bent backward on a handoff during the third quarter of the Panthers’ 24-3 victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday night.

Before that, Stull was 14 for 20 for 177 yards and threw a 21-yard touchdown to Oderick Turner. He threw 10 passes a year ago as a backup.

Colt Brennan threw for 416 yards and six touchdowns -- in the first half -- and No. 23 Hawaii opened its most eagerly awaited season with a 63-6 win over Northern Colorado on Saturday night at Honolulu.

“We took care of business. That’s what we wanted to do,” Brennan said.

His six first-half touchdown tosses gave him 99, tying USC’s Matt Leinart for sixth on the NCAA career list. Brennan began the game in 10th place and quickly passed Brady Quinn, Philip Rivers and Kliff Kingsbury.

He set or tied school records for completions in a quarter (19) and half (34), as well as touchdown passes in a quarter (four) and a half (six).

North Carolina State junior running back Toney Baker will be out the rest of the season after injuring a knee during the fourth quarter of the Wolfpack’s 25-23 loss to Central Florida.
