Bridge falls in stampede for cyclone aid
A section of a bridge collapsed under the weight of thousands of survivors of Tropical Cyclone Sidr rushing toward a relief center in Patuakhali district. At least one person died and dozens were injured, officials said.
A disaster management official said the stampede was triggered by an offer of rice by a private group that had not alerted local officials of its plans.
Meanwhile, the U.S. amphibious assault ship Kearsarge, carrying about 20 helicopters and relief supplies, anchored offshore and U.S. Navy officers arranged to deliver large aid packages as early as today to remote villages cut off by the storm.
