COVE NECK, N.Y. — A black garbage bag containing a human leg was found Wednesday morning on a private beach belonging to Madison Square Garden Chairman James L. Dolan, Nassau County police said.
Detectives from the Nassau County Police Homicide Squad said the trash bag was found in Cove Neck by an unidentified person, believed to be a caretaker.
Detective Sgt. Richard Laursen said the bag contained the lower part of a human leg.
Police would not say whether the leg was that of a man or a woman and declined to identify the victim’s race. Authorities said they were investigating whether another leg bone and human foot discovered Tuesday night in Suffolk County were related to the leg found on the beach.
Authorities also were trying to determine if a tattooed torso found on another beach three weeks ago was linked to the other body parts.
The torso washed ashore in suburban Mamaroneck. It had stab wounds and was stuffed inside a suitcase with a shirt and pair of pants. Authorities said at the time that the victim was a Latino or black woman.
The beach where the leg was found is at the end of a private drive. The exclusive section of Nassau County is a hilly, leafy neighborhood dotted with multimillion-dollar mansions situated on multi-acre plots.
