A 25-year-old who gave birth on a sidewalk in broad daylight and left the premature infant in a puddle of blood has been released from custody after an autopsy found the baby had been stillborn, authorities said.
Police had been holding the woman, described as a transient prostitute and crack-cocaine user, on suspicion of homicide since the birth Friday but released her Tuesday after learning the autopsy results.
The boy, estimated to have been conceived about five months earlier, was pronounced dead at the scene.
