$450 for a ticket? That’s not funny

CAIRO — Broadway theatergoers have grudgingly grown accustomed to the $100-plus ticket. But that’s chump change compared with the price of admission to Mel Brooks’ not-yet-opened musical, “Young Frankenstein,” whose ticket price will top out at a monstrous $450.
The show, which will bow on Broadway at the Hilton Theatre on Nov. 8, will set a record with its “premier” weekend tickets. According to a document obtained by The Times, “premium” seats will go for $375, while top weekday prices will be a still-hefty $275 and $350.
A source close to the production, who asked not to be named, said that “Young Frankenstein’s” eyebrow-raising prices should be seen “in context,” noting that 250 seats are designated as premier or premium and that $120 orchestra seats will be available from the second row back.
Still, word of the ticket prices for the show -- from the creators of the Tony Award-winning “The Producers” -- are already sparking caustic comment: “The show isn’t even running yet,” a “veteran producer” told the New York Post, “and they’re treating it like it’s already the biggest hit ever.”
