A world premiere musical celebrating the songs of Cy Coleman and the West Coast premiere of Wendy Wasserstein’s final play will cornerstone the Geffen Playhouse’s 2007-08 mainstage season, it was announced Tuesday.
The season opener (Sept. 19 to Oct. 28) is “Third,” Wasserstein’s sharp-edged look at a feminist college professor’s accusations of plagiarism against a male student, set against the backdrop of America’s launch of the war in Iraq.
It premiered at the Lincoln Center Theater in October 2005, three months before the playwright, who had won a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award, died of lymphoma.
Larry Gelbart and David Zippel’s new Coleman musical, “The Best Is Yet to Come,” a collection of stories told entirely through such Coleman classics as “Hey Big Spender” and the title tune, is scheduled for Nov. 28 to Jan. 6.
Three more mainstage plays and the programming for the Geffen’s smaller second stage, the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater, will be announced later.
