McClatchy Co., the third-largest U.S. newspaper chain by circulation, awarded Chief Executive Gary Pruitt with a bonus for 2006 of $950,000.
Pruitt, who was paid $1.05 million in salary, got about 90% of his potential award under his 2006 bonus formula, the Sacramento-based company said Monday in a regulatory filing. He is eligible for a $2-million award this year.
McClatchy rewarded Pruitt for his performance during a year in which the company climbed higher in the ranks of the largest U.S. newspaper chains as Pruitt, 49, engineered the $6.14-billion acquisition of No. 2 Knight Ridder Inc. Shares of McClatchy rose 4 cents to $39.01.
