Girl in hit-and-run crash is taken off support, dies

An 11-month-old Pomona girl who suffered severe head injuries in a hit-and-run collision died Thursday after her family requested that she be taken off life support, hospital officials said.
Alondra Kimberly Ibanez was injured when the car she was riding in on the northbound 71 Freeway was struck from behind Wednesday in Pomona by a pickup, authorities said. The driver of the truck remains at large, said California Highway Patrol Officer Edmund Zorrilla.
Alondra was in an infant car seat on the back seat of the 2003 Honda. Her father, Fernando Ibanez, 41, was driving, and her mother, Maria, 35, was in the front passenger seat. Fernando Ibanez had slowed to allow another vehicle to merge into his lane when the crash occurred, Zorrilla said.
The child was facing forward, which may have contributed to her injuries, he said.
Early Thursday, the day she turned 11 months old, her family requested that Alondra be taken off life support, said Julie Smith, a Loma Linda University Medical Center spokeswoman.
An investigation is continuing.
