School district trustees look for ways to cut
Santa Ana Unified School District board members discussed how to cut $21 million in spending for the upcoming school year but hadn’t completed their work during a meeting that continued late into the evening Tuesday.
“After several consecutive years of making reductions, it’s not getting any easier,” Rob Richardson, president of the school board, said before the meeting.
Orange County’s largest school district has declined by 6,000 -- to 54,800 students -- in four years. Schools in California are funded based on enrollment.
More than half the state’s 1,054 school districts and more than three-quarters of Orange County’s 27 school districts are facing declining enrollment.
