Fullerton falls to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo continued its strong play of late by defeating Cal State Fullerton, 90-80, on Saturday in a Big West Conference game at Fullerton.
The Mustangs, 16-10 overall, 7-5 Big West, have won five consecutive games and seven of eight.
Bobby Brown scored 26 points for the Titans (19-8, 9-5), who have lost three of four. Marcus Crenshaw had 20 points.
The Mustangs led by as many as 13 before the Titans narrowed the deficit to 70-66 with five minutes left. But the Mustangs made 18 of 24 free throws in the final 4:15.
Cal State Northridge 76, Pacific 73 -- Calvin Chitwood came off the bench to score 19 points, including a key free throw with 13.5 seconds left, to help the host Matadors (14-14, 5-7 Big West) end a nine-game losing streak to the Tigers.
The Matadors blew most of an 11-point lead in the final four minutes, and Solomon HorseChief’s three-point basket with 1:48 left to play pulled the Tigers (11-15, 5-6) to within 69-67.
UC Santa Barbara 68, UC Riverside 67 --Cecil Brown made a turnaround jumper with 8.3 seconds left to lift the Gauchos (16-10, 7-5 Big West) past the Highlanders (6-22, 1-12) at Riverside. Brown’s shot came 20 seconds after Riverside took its first lead of the game on a three-point basket by Justin Bell.
St. Mary’s 97, Pepperdine 72 -- Brett Collins’ 25 points included seven three-point baskets, and the Gaels (15-14, 7-6 West Coast Conference) routed the Waves at Malibu. Pepperdine (7-22, 3-10) had not lost as many as 22 games since the 1965-66 season, when it dropped 24.
Loyola Marymount 67, Santa Clara 66 -- Adoyah Miller made a 19-foot jumper with five seconds left to lift the host Lions (13-16, 5-8 WCC) over the Broncos (20-8, 10-3). With the Lions trailing and 22 seconds to play, the ball was in-bounded on the Santa Clara end to Miller, who dribbled for 14 seconds before making the shot.
Long Beach State 102, UC Davis 77 -- Aaron Nixon, who scored 27 points, led a 15-0 run over a three-minute span early in the second half as the 49ers (19-7) opened a 69-47 lead with 14:32 left. The Aggies (4-22) lost their 10th in a row.
WOMEN
California 88, UCLA 69 -- Natasha Vital converted a steal into a layup with 14:30 left at Berkeley to give the Golden Bears (22-7, 12-6 Pacific 10) a 44-43 lead and they never trailed again. Noelle Quinn had 19 points for the Bruins (13-17, 7-11).
