Assistant principal freed after allegedly pointing gun at man

An assistant principal at John C. Fremont High School in South Los Angeles is out on bail after his arrest Thursday on allegations that he assaulted the stepfather of a former student with a handgun.
Police say Steve Rooney, 38, pointed a gun at the stepfather during an altercation Jan. 1. The stepfather filed a complaint, which led to an investigation, said Martha Garcia, an LAPD spokeswoman. Garcia would not say where the altercation took place.
Los Angeles Unified School District officials were tight-lipped about the arrest. Rooney, who posted bail Friday morning, “has been reassigned to a non-school setting, in other words, one where there are no children until we find out additional information or the outcome of the investigation,” said district spokeswoman Ellen Morgan.
Neither school district officials nor police would provide the name of the alleged victim or his daughter. Rooney, whose next court date is March 1, could not be reached.
