Army chief fired in wake of crash

President Rafael Correa fired Ecuador’s army chief, Pedro Machado, after blaming him in part for the helicopter crash that killed Defense Minister Guadalupe Larriva last week, Economy Minister Ricardo Patino said.
Patino, who is temporarily acting as defense minister, said a military report cited a series of mistakes with the planning, operation and security of the flight. Larriva’s teenage daughter and five military officers also died.
