A roadside explosion killed two NATO soldiers and wounded three in a convoy in eastern Afghanistan, the alliance said in a statement. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization did not specify the location or give the victims’ nationalities, but most NATO troops in the east are American.
The blast occurred after more than 50 Taliban fighters were killed as they tried to attack a government center in Helmand province, Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry said.
The battle, fought by Afghan soldiers backed by NATO airstrikes, took place in Sangin. The district is next to Musa Qala, a town Taliban fighters fled this week amid an offensive by Afghan, British and U.S. forces.
More than two dozen militants and a British soldier were killed in the Musa Qala battle.
