Larry J. Feinberg, a curator of European painting and sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago, has been appointed director of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. A scholar of Italian Renaissance and French 18th century art and a strong advocate of art education, Feinberg will succeed retiring director Phillip M. Johnston on March 1.
Educated in art history at Harvard University, Feinberg was a curator at Oberlin College’s Allen Art Museum in Ohio, the Frick Collection in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, before working for 10 years in Chicago. There he organized or coordinated such exhibitions as “Girodet: Romantic Rebel” and “The Medici Michelangelo, and the Art of Late Renaissance Florence.”
