* Boston 6, at Baltimore 2: Josh Beckett came within one out of a shutout and became the first 15-game winner in the majors, although the Angels’ John Lackey matched him later in the night. Beckett (15-5) yielded eight hits, struck out eight and walked none in 8 2/3 innings. He was lifted after Miguel Tejada hit a run-scoring single and Kevin Millar hit an RBI double.

* at Detroit 5, Oakland 2: Justin Verlander won for the first time in four weeks. Verlander (12-4), who hadn’t won since July 15, gave the Tigers only their second victory from a starter in 24 games. He gave up two runs and seven hits in six-plus innings. Dan Haren (13-4) lost for the first time in six starts, giving up three runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.

* New York 11, at Cleveland 2: Alex Rodriguez hit a pair of two-run homers to help the Yankees (65-51) move 14 games over .500 for the first time this season. They are 22-8 since the All-Star break -- the best record in the majors.

* Seattle 7, at Chicago 6: Yuniesky Betancourt hit his first career grand slam, Raul Ibanez had a three-run homer and the Mariners held on to beat the White Sox. The Mariners have won 10 of 14 after losing a season-high seven in a row.

* at Kansas City 4, Toronto 1: Leo Nunez combined with two relievers for a four-hitter. Nunez, who was making his third big league start after being used strictly as a reliever the past two seasons, gave up one run and two hits in five innings. He has yielded only one run in 11 innings in his past two starts.

* Tampa Bay 3, at Texas 0: Edwin Jackson pitched a four-hitter for his first career complete game.

* at Angels 4, Minnesota 3: The Twins’ bullpen wasted a strong outing by starter Carlos Silva.
