Why Such ‘Vulgar’ Poses?

I can’t imagine where photographer Kenji Toma got his inspiration for the piece “4 Steps to Dressing Up” (Fall Fashion Issue, Sept. 10). First of all, forget the clothes; they don’t matter in the context of the model’s outrageous, silly and vulgar poses. Metals, furs, knits and plaids are all worthy fashion statements and deserve better treatment than this offensive and preposterous presentation. If this is high fashion, and since I don’t plan on falling up or down stairs in the near future, I am happy to be frumpy.

As professionals who treat girls and women struggling with eating disorders, we were appalled to see models appearing as emaciated, lifeless bodies in suggestive poses. As long as our society continues to objectify women, equality between the sexes will remain elusive.
