Met is bringing opera to cinemas
New York’s Metropolitan Opera, embracing 21st century technology as a tool for boosting an art form born in the 16th century, will send live feeds of its Dec. 30 Julie Taymor-directed and James Levine-conducted production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” to more than 50 theaters across North America -- including the Burbank 16 and the Irvine Spectrum 21.
The 100-minute broadcast, titled “Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD,” will begin at 10:30 a.m. It is the first of six high-definition matinee broadcasts via satellite scheduled this season, with tickets priced at $18 for adults and $15 for children.
The second broadcast of the series, Bellini’s 2 1/2 -hour “I Puritani” at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 6, will screen in Burbank, Irvine and also at the Alhambra Renaissance 14.
Tickets are on sale now in Irvine, Alhambra and via the opera company’s website (www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/broadcast/hd_events.aspx).
A Burbank 16 spokesman said the theater hasn’t decided when to start selling tickets.
